Delighted to be invited to the first Relaxed Prom with the kids and pleased to report it was a smashing success!
Quite an impression, 4 days now and they are still talking about Rossini and galloping on the William Tell ouverture. The Sugar Plum Fairy was an instant hit with our friend Sophia – though we’ve been all questioning Andy’s outfit and looks!
Waltzing around has been the next popular thing and I’m afraid that Andy’s hilarious waltz performance was more appreciated than Johann Strauss and buzzing Bumblebee flight by Rimsky-Korsakov.
The Relaxed Performance was also the best for our cheeky monkeys which are just under 4 years old. They got very excited, conducted and danced around quite a bit.
It is also a great intro for an orchestra on the stage and its sections – each group wore different colours to be easier spotted, introduced themselves and each instrument. Some great funky facts (please excuse my Go Jetters terminology!) will keep the kiddies entertained: strings section in purple (violins, violas, cellos and double basses); percussion in green (drums, cymbals, bells, xylophones, marimbas and the bongos); brass section in yellow (trumpets, trombones and tubas) and woodwind in blue (flutes, oboes, clarinets and bassoons).
The conducting needed no introduction for our eldest, a week-end before being fully immersed at the Holland Park Opera Open Day and conducting his very own quartet!
We wrapped up the kiddies first BBC Proms at Verdi’s – RAH brilliant casual restaurant on the first floor. Aperols and some yum bites (prawns in pancetta !) for parents and cute lunch for the kids.
Temperamental weather with heavy showers resumed our beautiful day and rather than heading to Diana memorial, we headed for different playdates. BBC Proms run until September 9th , with 5 other sessions for the whole family and some great evening sessions adults only.
If you are unlucky like us weather wise, after the Proms head for South Kensington museums (free of charge) or Kensington Palace (we wrote about it in here). I also pencilled in a grown up treat at the Proms and hopefully I will report back soon!
