Gruffalo’s child theatre – best of 2017 London festive family treats

Festive London treats keep on coming and getting better: Gruffalo’s child theatre on Sunday with my 4 years old and friends was a blast. We were all fully mesmerised – from L who is barely 7 months old, to his 2.5 years old lovely sister, my 4 years old cheeky monkey and his friend plus grownups!

Dare I say that Gruffalo’s child story and la mise en scene is even better than the Gruffalo itself? I loved the parenting side of Gruffalo’s family: the hairy purpled prick father is sweet and paternal. He has the typical troubles to be listened to and pass any kind of wisdom to the next generation. He snores terribly and falls asleep before his energetic and mischievous offspring. He also fails to notice the missing child exploring big time the Deep dark wood – but it’s all good fun in Julia Donaldson story and on stage!

The Gruffalo’s child is surprise surprise, the cutest bravest little hairy purpled prick Gruffalo girl. There’s cute mischief and cheekiness as well lots of courage to head into the Deep dark wood. A true explorer and questioner, she travels with her magic stick searching for the Big Bad Mouse only to meet all Deep Dark Wood creatures.

Snake’s chatting and singing away is hilarious and enchanting with his Latino accents. The owl questions all parties about the flying class. The fox is foxy and funky – but hey, we need to save some details for the show!

One can easily relate to the perceptions and spare times of Deep dark woods – fascinating and hilarious. Even in Deep dark woods talking a good game gets you somewhere – size irrelevant! There’s a blue moon alternating with the full moon overseeing the tales and adventures – fairytale charming.

Gruffalo’s child theatre is engaging, witty and sweet. And guess what:  we were not scared! It may be the magic Stick or its catchy tune: I’ll stick with you, You stick with me! As last year, we almost missed the end of Gruffalo show: my 3 years old and the biggest Gruffalo fan, was very keen to leave once the big guy orange eyes, black tongue, purple prickle, terrible claws, terrible teeth and terrible jaws made an entrance. Delighted to report that on this occasion all kiddies just laughed their heads off!

Big thumb up to Tall Stories, Kenny Wax Family Entertainment, Sophie Alice, Catriona Mackenzie and Andrew Mudie for a magic performance – family theatre at its best!

For a full day out just around Lyric theatre West End, head after to National Galleries in Trafalgar Square or  London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. Or simply hang around Trafalgar or Covent Garden to enjoy some street art and festively lit beautiful squares.
