One of our best trips out of London, so we ventured back to Waddesdon Manor with kids on an autumn Saturday with dramatic wide skies and unpredictable weather. What better than a National Trust formerly Rotschild owned and a bohemian Waddesdon Manor afternoon tea on such day?!?
Quite different to our first time 4 years ago, when I fell in love with this country house designed as a French chateau for Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild.
Back in July 2013, the summer was in full bloom, I was heavily pregnant and we had the most peaceful and enchanting day mostly lying in the grass, soaking in the sun and picnicking.
The grounds are vast and there’s so much to explore it dos not really fit in a single day out.
We started with the Aviary and running around fountains when the first shower of the day rushed us in Waddesdon Manor lovely restaurant. The Manor restaurant’s decor and the food are quaint and delish. We indulged in seafood express menu, duck and fish and chips, whilst kids shared a pizza, sausages, and vegetables.
The restaurant is very conveniently located just on the side of the country house, so parents took turns waiting for the food /having wine and keeping an eye on the kids outside. As naturally the kiddies decided that a little rain will not delay their exploring and running around! Restaurant staff has been the most delightful and accommodating, making us feel so welcome despite kids cheekiness and little patience. We will be back, Waddesdon Manor afternoon tea is calling and luring us back again.
The sculptures just in front of Waddesdon Manor are a great clue of what Rothschild family excels at (aside banking and art!). Waddesdon Manor National Trust hosts the largest private collection of Rothschild wines worldwide, over 150,000 bottles in their cellars. We had to buy and test some, thrilled to confirm they were a treat. Also at £10 a bottle, will be back for more!
The nature playground was next: 10 minutes delightful walk from the Manor.
The Stables are also next to the playground: coffee shop and very cool art exhibition and contemporary design at its best – Creatures & Creations.
The next shower of the day rushed us back to the Manor right in time for our timed tickets for the House. My years old and his friend 5 years old embarked with us on the tour, looking for clues in the stately apartments.
Our kids consistently corrected us: Waddesdon is a chateau and a palace, definitely not a house.
Waddesdon Manor afternoon tea – anyone?
Exquisite rich interiors full of history and meanings from past lives, French Calendars, Tales from the Archives, dining tables and Drawing Rooms – it took us over an hour to fully explore. My 4 years old alternated between mischief, curiosity and an urge to head back to the next room and/ or playground.
Best trips out of London: Waddesdon manor with kids
His friend who is 5, got very engaged in the trail and clues. All this time, our 17 months slept peacefully after a very busy half day – walking up just in time for afternoon gouté.
A delightful dayout with the drive from Kensington just over an hour – cannot recommend warmly enough.

Oh wow this looks so grand and beautiful! I love visiting these kind of places with my family 🙂
Thanks Helen, hope you get to see Waddesdon Manor soon! Thanks for stopping by!
What a stunning place to visit! We got NT memberships this week & am so excited to start exploring x
Congrats then Sophie, National Trust has the most gorgeous places accross UK! Enjoy and keep me posted on your favourites!
That house is amazing and so grand! One of the Rothchilds live down here in Cornwall. I’ve met her, she’s nice, a little eccentric. But then I guess you can get away with that when you’re a Rothchild 😉
Hehe Dean, aren’t we all a bit eccentric? 😉 very cool to meet a Rotschild, I bet conversations were very interesting! Their sense of art, banking and wine is very fascinating for me!
Oh wow this is amazing! What a grand house to visit, imagine living there?! We love the national trust!
I know, I also fantasised a couple of minutes about living in there 😉 And likewise, soo in love with National Trust!
We are National Trust Members and love exploring their properties. This looks amazing, that house is beautiful. I’m not brave enough to go in the houses yet with my two!
Haha, I know what you mean! Our toddler also not quite ready for civilised visit in stately apartments, hoping maybe in a year time. As you know what they say, hope dies last 😉 thanks for stopping by!
Waddesdon Manor looks stunning, it is on my to-do list although slightly too far away
Hi Kara, I know, for us as well over an hour drive for a daytrip is quite long but definitely worth it! I am already thinking about going back for theit Xmas events and stock on Rotschild wines!
I love National Trust properties, they offer so much opportunity to see different styles of homes and gardens
Hi Sarah, thats indeed how we feel, very grateful to have National Trust with so muvh on offer!
The interior is just as gorgeous as the outside, I love that the Waddesdon Manor is both a chateau and a palace.
Thank you, indeed gorgeous inside out! You won’t be surprised to hear it’s the 2nd most National Trust property countrywise!
What a fantastic day out. There seems to be lots of variety and plenty to keep the kids busy too
Thanks Zena, indeed fantastic, one of our favourite NT properties! Wish it was slightly closer for visits every months to the cellar and their cool art exhibitions 😉
Looks like a great day out. I’m a bit of a architecture geek, this is right up my street. I’d get lost in there in my own imagination. Love it.
How great to go back and visit somewhere with your kids. The house looks stunning! Shame your weather was I would say changeable but definitely looks like you had fun!! Thank you for linking up to the #familyfunlinky
Looks so elegant, and you got great weather for it too. I love NT or NTS properties.
The manor is absolutely stunning and I love the both the scultpures and the rich interior displays. No wonder you had a good time at Waddeson Manor.
Such lovely pictures, the manor looks gorgeous. x
Thank you Steph! X
That’s one of the things I love so much about Europe. The volume of history and the opportunity to get away from crowds and yet have access to eat at some amazing restaurants. This manor looks incredibly lovely and would love to check it out myself in the future. Thanks for sharing!
